Music genres in English: What is your favourite? | EF English Live

Five music genres and movements I chose from class were: Rock, Heavy Metal, Goth, Pop Punk, and Hip Hop

The artist I chose to represent rock was Green Day, which is an American Rock band formed in California in 1987. I have been listening to them since I was in middle school and my favorite album of theirs is American Idiot (2004). I really enjoy their music because to me, they kind of represent teenage angst and rebellion, which to an angsty teenager, was very appealing. Even though I may be past that stage of my life, I still really enjoy their music and will throw it on when I'm feeling nostalgic. Here is the link to one of my favorites from the American Idiot album, Holiday.

For the heavy metal genre I choose to represent it with the band Metallica. Formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, Metallica is an American heavy metal band that is ranked as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time. They are even considered one of the 4 founding bands of the "thrash metal" genre. I started listening to them at an early age, since it is one of my dad's favorite bands. He would always play their music in the car and was so determined to get my brothers and I to like not only the band, but the genre in general. It definitely worked and now I have multiple Heavy Metal bands on my playlist with Metallica's song, Enter Sandman, being one of my favorites.

Goth is not a genre of music I am super familiar with; however, I do really enjoy the band Evanescence, which is consider goth rock. Evanescence is an American goth rock band created in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995. I found out about them through my mom who has been a fan for a while. Compared to other rock bands, like Green Day, I find that Evanescence has a very unique sound that is a bit darker and more akin to that Goth genre. Lithium is one of my favorite songs from their first album, Fallen

I actually listen to a lot of pop punk bands because it is a genre I really enjoy, one of my favorite groups being, Panic! At The Disco. Panic! At The Disco was originally a pop punk band from Las Vegas, Nevada, but is now down to original member Brendon Urie. I have been a fan of this group for a long time now, I even saw them in concert for my 16th birthday! Their music has evolved over time to become more of generic pop but their early albums stick to the pop punk genre. This is one of my favorites from one of their early albums, The Ballad of Mona Lisa.

For my last genre, hip hop, I chose one of my favorite artists, Lizzo. Melissa Viviane Jefferson, also known as Lizzo, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and flutist from Detroit, Michigan. One thing I absolutely love about Lizzo is her confidence. She is very unapologetic in herself and her music and I feel she brings a lot of great things to the genre. One of my favorite songs of her's is Truth Hurts .
